Crosses completed measure intent, not threat
When a full-back or winger gets praised for “putting balls into the box,” the stat behind the praise is usually crosses completed — the number of times a player whipped one in from wide and found a teammate. It sounds like a creation stat, a tally of chances manufactured down the flank, and on the broadcast it gets treated as proof of an attacking threat. But a completed cross is one of the lowest-value attacking actions in football, and the count rewards a team’s attacking style and a player’s willingness to keep slinging the ball in far more than it rewards genuine danger. A high crossing number tells you a player attacks from wide and does it often. It says almost nothing about whether those crosses actually threaten the goal, and quite a lot of crossing is simply the least productive thing a wide player can choose to do.
What a completed cross actually records
A completed cross records that a player delivered the ball from a wide area into the penalty box and a teammate made first contact with it. That is the whole event. It does not know whether the contact produced a clean shot on goal, a flicked header that looped harmlessly out, or a knockdown that the defense cleared a moment later. It does not distinguish a dangerous low cut-back to the penalty spot from a hopeful floated ball that a center-back headed away under no pressure. As long as a teammate touched it, it counts the same. The stat captures the act of crossing and the fact of contact, while discarding the only thing that matters — whether the delivery created a real opportunity to score.
Crossing is an inefficient way to attack
The deeper issue is what crossing is worth. Open-play crosses are one of the least efficient routes to a goal in the modern game: the vast majority are cleared, and even completed ones lead to a shot a small fraction of the time, with most of those shots being difficult, off-balance headers from poor angles. This is precisely why analytically-driven sides have spent years trying to cross less and instead work the ball into higher-value central areas, looking for cut-backs and shots from the middle of the box rather than aerial balls from the touchline. A player who racks up completed crosses is often doing a lot of a low-value activity, and a high total can be a symptom of an attack that cannot break a defense down any other way rather than evidence of a dangerous creator.
The number tracks style and volume
Crossing totals are driven by tactics and opportunity before individual quality. A wing-back in a system built to get the ball wide and deliver early will attempt and complete far more crosses than an inverted winger in a possession side that prioritizes central combinations, regardless of which is the better footballer. A team chasing a game against a deep block will pile up crosses out of desperation, inflating the totals of whoever is stationed wide. The denominator matters too: a player who attempts forty crosses and completes ten looks productive in the completed column while wasting thirty possessions, and the raw count rewards him for the volume rather than penalizing him for the waste. The number is a description of where a team attacks and how often, not a ranking of who is dangerous.
Completion rate hides the cost
Reading crosses completed as a success stat also misreads what completion means. A “completed” cross that a defender wins in the air but is credited as reaching a teammate, a deflection that falls to an attacker by chance, or a deep ball that finds a winger in a harmless wide position all count as completions. Meanwhile the act of crossing surrenders possession the large majority of the time, and those turnovers — the failed crosses — are a real cost that the completed count quietly omits. A player can post a healthy number of completed crosses while his crossing, taken as a whole, is actively lowering his team’s chance of scoring on those possessions. The visible successes are tallied; the far more numerous failures and their cost are not.
Why the eye and the box score disagree
Watch a genuinely threatening wide player and the difference is clear. The dangerous ones pick their moments: they beat a man to the byline and pull the ball back to the penalty spot, they clip a low ball across the six-yard box, they wait for a runner rather than crossing into a crowd. Much of that does not even register as a conventional cross, and when it does, its value lies in the quality of the delivery, not the fact of completion. The player who leads the league in completed crosses, by contrast, is often the one firing hopeful balls into packed boxes all afternoon. The eye sees who actually unsettles a defense; the crossing column counts who keeps trying the hardest, lowest-percentage option.
What to read instead
The fix is to measure the threat a wide player creates, not the volume of his deliveries. Expected assists weigh each pass by the quality of the chance it sets up, so a clever cut-back counts for more than a cleared floater; shot-creating actions and chances created capture genuine opportunities rather than mere contact; and possession-value or expected-threat models credit the ball progression that actually raises a team’s odds of scoring. Comparing those to a player’s raw crossing volume reveals who turns wide deliveries into danger and who is just padding a low-value count. The honest read
Crossing has its place — a side with a dominant aerial target, a well-worked cut-back, or a moment to exploit against a stretched defense can make it pay, and the best wide players deliver genuinely dangerous balls. At the extremes the skill is real: a precise, threatening delivery is a weapon. But crosses completed, as a counting stat, ranks intent and volume in one of football’s least efficient actions, flatters players in cross-heavy systems, and hides the possessions thrown away in the attempt. Read it as a marker of how a team attacks from wide, then check the chance quality underneath it. The wide player who matters is the one creating real openings, not the one who simply keeps slinging the ball into the box.
