Exit velocity is a ceiling, not an outcome

Statcast turned the crack of the bat into a number, and that number became a shortcut. A hitter posts a 117-mph rocket and a top-of-the-scale average exit velocity, and the conclusion writes itself: elite bat, future star, can’t-miss power. Exit velocity is genuinely valuable information — it is one of the most stable, repeatable things a hitter does — but the way it gets quoted confuses a ceiling with a result. Knowing how hard a player can hit the ball tells you what is possible. It does not tell you what actually happens, because the path from a hard-hit ball to a run on the scoreboard runs through several other variables exit velocity says nothing about.

What the radar actually records

Exit velocity is the speed of the ball off the bat at the moment of contact, measured on batted balls. That is its entire scope. It is silent on the angle the ball left the bat, silent on where it landed, and — crucially — silent on every pitch the hitter swung through or took. A scorched 110-mph ground ball straight to the second baseman and a 110-mph line drive into the gap record the same exit velocity and produce opposite outcomes. The radar gun loves them equally. It is measuring the energy of contact, not the value of it, and energy without direction is just potential.

Launch angle is the missing half

Exit velocity only becomes damage when it is paired with the right launch angle, and the two are reported as if they were one idea when they are emphatically separate skills. A hitter who crushes the ball at a steep downward angle produces hard grounders that turn into easy outs; the same exit velocity at fifteen to thirty degrees produces extra-base hits. This is why the leaderboard for average exit velocity and the leaderboard for actual offensive production never quite match. There are hitters near the top of the exit-velo charts whose results lag badly because their contact stays on the ground, and quieter hitters who optimize angle and outproduce them. The radar gun cannot see that gap. It only reports how hard, never how usefully.

Average exit velocity hides the swing-and-miss

Here is the quietest distortion: exit velocity is only measured on balls a hitter actually hits. A free swinger who whiffs a third of the time but barrels what he does connect with will post a gaudy average exit velocity, because all the empty swings simply do not appear in the sample. The number describes the contact he makes while ignoring how often he makes none. Two hitters can share an identical average exit velocity while one of them puts the ball in play far more often, and the second hitter is plainly more productive — but the exit-velo line treats them as peers. A ceiling stat that excludes the swings-and-misses is, by construction, blind to the cost of chasing that ceiling.

The max-EV mirage

Broadcasts love the single hardest-hit ball of a player’s season, and scouts do use maximum exit velocity as a raw-power indicator because it reveals the top end of a hitter’s strength. But one 118-mph missile says almost nothing about the other six hundred swings. Max EV is a measure of what a hitter is capable of on his single best swing, which is real information for projection but close to useless for describing a season already played. Treating the highlight-reel number as a summary of production is like grading a sprinter on his fastest single stride rather than his time. The peak is impressive. The average and the consistency are what win games.

Hard contact still has to find grass

Even a perfectly struck ball can be caught, and over a season the defense behind the pitcher claims a meaningful share of hard contact. This is the same lesson that makes batting average on balls in play so volatile: outcomes on contact carry real luck, and exit velocity, because it stops measuring at the bat, captures none of it. A hitter can square the ball up all year and run into a stretch of loud outs, or get fortunate with bloops and seeing eyes. Exit velocity is more stable than results precisely because it sits upstream of all that noise — which is exactly why it should be read as an input, not as the box score.

It rewards the pitch, not just the hitter

Exit velocity also rises and falls with what the pitcher served, which means part of the number belongs to the man on the mound. A mistake left over the heart of the plate gets crushed by hitters of modest power, inflating their readings, while a well-located pitch on the corner suppresses contact quality even for sluggers. Over a season the quality of pitches a hitter sees — a product of lineup protection, count leverage, and how pitchers choose to attack him — leaves a fingerprint on his average exit velocity that has nothing to do with his swing. The radar gun cannot credit or discount the pitch; it simply clocks the result, handing the hitter full ownership of an outcome two people produced.

What to read instead

The useful move is to read exit velocity as one ingredient in a recipe, not as the meal. Barrel rate — the share of batted balls that combine high exit velocity with the productive launch angle — folds the two halves back together and tracks real damage far better than raw EV. Hard-hit rate tells you how often, not just how hard. Contact and whiff rates restore the swings the average quietly deletes. And expected stats built from the full contact profile estimate what the quality of contact should have produced. The honest read

Exit velocity is a real measurement of a real thing — how hard a hitter strikes the ball — and it is one of the most trustworthy signals in the game because it stabilizes fast and resists luck. That is its strength and its limit in the same breath. It describes the quality of the raw material, not the finished product, and a hitter is not the sum of his hardest swings any more than a factory is the sum of its best parts. Read exit velocity as a ceiling and a skill input. Just never read it as production, because the distance between how hard a ball is hit and how many runs it scores is filled with angle, contact, and luck the radar gun never sees.
