Points per game is a volume stat, not a value stat
No number in basketball carries more cultural weight with less analytical content than points per game. It leads the back of the basketball card, decides the scoring title, anchors MVP arguments, and shows up in every contract negotiation as shorthand for offensive value. And yet the players who top the points-per-game leaderboard in a given season are frequently not the most efficient scorers, not the most valuable offensive players, and occasionally not even the best players on their own teams. That gap between reputation and reality is not an accident. Points per game is a volume statistic dressed as a value statistic. It counts how many points a player accumulates in an average outing, and it tells you almost nothing about how much it cost his team to generate them.
What points per game actually records
A point is a point in the box score whether it came on a wide-open transition dunk, a heavily contested step-back with a hand in the face, or a technical free throw awarded to the best foul shooter on the floor. Points per game sums all of them and divides by games played. That is the entire calculation. It does not know how many shots a player took to reach his total, how many minutes he was on the floor to take them, or how fast his team played while he did it. Two players averaging twenty-six points can arrive there on wildly different volumes of shooting, and the raw average erases the difference completely.
The stat is a rate over games, not over opportunities, and games are a poor unit of measurement because they vary enormously in length of playing time and number of possessions. That makes points per game a compound of at least three things — minutes, pace, and shot volume — before any question of scoring skill even enters the picture.
Minutes and pace are baked in
The single biggest driver of a high scoring average is simply being on the floor. A player who logs thirty-eight minutes a night has ten more minutes of scoring opportunity than one who logs twenty-eight, and that gap alone can be worth eight or nine points regardless of skill. Coaching decisions, foul trouble, blowout benchings, and load management all move the minutes total, and every one of them moves points per game without touching how well a player actually scores.
Pace compounds the effect. A team that plays at ninety-nine possessions per game hands its scorers more chances than a team grinding at ninety-two. The leaguewide acceleration of the last decade has inflated raw scoring averages across the board, which is why comparing a modern thirty-point scorer to one from a slower era through points per game alone is a category error. The number rose partly because the game got faster, not because the players got better.
Volume is not efficiency
The deepest problem is that points per game rewards taking shots, and taking shots is not the same as making them count. A player can lead the league in scoring while posting a below-average true shooting percentage, which means he is scoring a lot precisely because he is missing a lot — each miss is another possession spent, another rebound conceded, another point his defense now has to prevent on the other end.
Efficiency metrics exist to answer the question points per game refuses to ask: how many points did the team get per shot attempt or per possession the player used? A scorer who averages twenty-four points on sixty percent true shooting is doing something categorically more valuable than one averaging twenty-eight on fifty-two percent, yet the raw average ranks the less efficient player higher. The scoreboard cares about points per possession. Points per game quietly ignores the denominator that matters most.
The usage tax nobody subtracts
Every shot a high-volume scorer takes is a shot a teammate does not. That is the usage tax, and points per game never charges it. A player who dominates the ball can post a gaudy average while depressing the efficiency of everyone around him, and the box score credits him for the points while hiding the opportunity cost spread across four other players.
This is why lineup and on-off data so often complicate the story a scoring average tells. Some of the league’s highest scorers move the needle far less than their averages suggest once you account for what the offense does when the ball is in someone else’s hands. The point total is real. The claim that the total equals value is the part that does not survive contact with the possession math.
Why the scoring title rarely crowns the best offense
If points per game measured offensive value, the scoring champion’s team would reliably field one of the best offenses in the league. It often does not. Scoring titles have gone to players on middling or bad offensive teams, because a heliocentric scorer on a thin roster accumulates points by necessity — someone has to shoot, and the volume flows to him by default rather than by design.
A high average on a poor offense is frequently a symptom of a roster problem, not a solution to one. The points are getting scored, but they are not translating into the thing scoring is supposed to buy, which is efficient offense that outpaces the opponent. When the leaderboard and the offensive-rating standings disagree this often, the sensible conclusion is that the leaderboard is measuring something other than offensive quality.
What to read instead
The fix is not to throw out scoring totals — it is to read them beside the context points per game strips out. True shooting percentage tells you how efficiently the points arrived. Points per seventy-five possessions or per thirty-six minutes neutralizes the pace and playing-time inflation that raw averages smuggle in. Usage rate tells you how much of the offense a player consumed to get there, and on-off numbers tell you whether the team actually scored better with him leading it.
Read together, those numbers turn a scoring average from a verdict into a starting point. A twenty-eight-point scorer on elite efficiency and heavy usage is a genuine offensive engine. A twenty-eight-point scorer on poor efficiency and a bad team is a volume shooter the roster cannot avoid feeding. Points per game cannot tell those two players apart. The context stats can, and they should be doing the talking.
The honest read
Points per game is a real measurement of a real thing: how many points a player tends to score in a night. At the extremes it still carries information — a thirty-point scorer is doing something a ten-point scorer is not, and no serious analysis pretends otherwise. But between those poles, where the MVP debates and the max-contract arguments actually live, the average ranks accumulation rather than value, and it hands its highest honors to whoever shoots the most on the fastest team with the most minutes.
Treat it as the headline, not the story. It tells you who scores a lot. It does not tell you who scores well, who scores efficiently, or who makes his team’s offense better by scoring. For those questions — the ones that actually decide games — you have to look at the possession the average left out.
