Pressure rate is a charting opinion, not a fact
Pressure rate has quietly become the pass-rush stat that serious people trust. Sacks are too noisy, everyone agrees; a rusher can win his rep every snap and finish with a goose egg because the quarterback got the ball out. Pressure rate—the share of pass snaps on which a rusher generates a sack, hit, or hurry—promises to fix that by capturing the disruption sacks miss. It is smarter than the sack column, and it correlates better with the things that win games. But there is a catch that rarely makes it into the conversation: a pressure is not a recorded event like a completion or a tackle. It is a judgment call, assigned after the fact by a human charter watching film and deciding whether a defender got close enough, fast enough, to count. Pressure rate is an opinion with a decimal point.
Where the number comes from
Sacks and hits are relatively objective—the quarterback goes down or gets hit, and everyone can see it. Hurries are not. A hurry is charted when a grader decides a rusher forced the quarterback to move, throw early, or abandon his read before he wanted to. That is a defensible thing to track, but there is no bright line for it. How close is close enough? Half a yard? Did the quarterback move because of this rusher or because his first read was covered? Was the early throw pressure or just the design of the play? Different charting operations answer those questions with different internal rules, and the same snap can be a hurry to one service and a clean pocket to another. The number that lands on the leaderboard is the sum of thousands of these small verdicts.
The services disagree, and that is the tell
The cleanest evidence that pressure is subjective is that the outlets who chart it do not agree with each other. Pull the same edge rusher’s pressure total from two respected sources over the same season and you will routinely find double-digit gaps, sometimes enough to move a player from the top ten to the middle of the pack. If pressures were a fact, independent observers would converge on the same count the way they converge on receptions or rushing yards. They do not, because each service is applying its own threshold for what disruption qualifies. When two honest, careful graders watch identical film and produce different numbers, the disagreement is not error — it is the built-in variance of a metric that depends on where you draw a fuzzy line.
Coverage is silently in the number
A rusher does not generate pressure alone; he generates it in cooperation with the coverage behind him. When defensive backs blanket every route, the quarterback holds the ball, and a rusher who would otherwise have surrendered a quick completion suddenly has an extra second to win and get charted for a pressure. When the coverage busts and the ball comes out in 1.9 seconds, the same rusher running the same move gets nothing to show for it. Pressure rate therefore rewards defenders who play behind good secondaries and punishes those stuck in front of bad ones, in exactly the way the stat is supposed to avoid. The metric that was built to isolate the rusher still leaks the rest of the defense into his line.
Not all pressures are the same size
A charted pressure is a binary—it happened or it did not—but the events lumped inside it are wildly unequal. A strip-sack that flips the game and a hurry that made a quarterback throw a half-beat early off a play-action rollout both count as one unit of pressure. So a rusher who wins late, cleanly, and decisively can post the same pressure count as one who merely lurks near the pocket and gets generous credit for proximity. The rate treats a game-wrecking rep and a cosmetic one as identical, which means two players with matching pressure rates can have delivered completely different amounts of actual damage. The number flattens the very quality—how much a pressure mattered—that separates elite rushers from busy ones.
Why it still beats the sack column
For all of that, pressure rate is genuinely more useful than raw sacks, and pretending otherwise would be its own mistake. Sacks are the noisiest way to evaluate a pass rusher — they depend on coverage, quarterback habits, and luck far more than pressures do, and they miss most of what a great rusher actually does. Pressure rate captures the disruption that never shows up in the box score, and over a full season it is far more predictive of future sack production than past sacks are. The point is not that pressure rate is bad. It is that it is a modeled, human-graded estimate wearing the costume of a hard count, and it deserves the skepticism we give estimates rather than the trust we give facts.
How to read it honestly
Treat pressure rate as a range, not a point. If one service has a rusher at a 14 percent pressure rate and another has him at 11, the truth is “somewhere in the low teens, and clearly good,” not “exactly 14.” Weight the objective components—sacks and quarterback hits—a little more heavily than raw hurries, because those are the parts of the number two observers would agree on. Look at pass-rush win rate, which times a defender’s victory at the point of attack and leans less on the downstream judgment of whether the quarterback felt it. And always check who was in coverage behind him. A pressure rate is a strong starting point for an argument about a pass rusher. It is a weak place to end one.
The honest read
Pressure rate is a real attempt to measure a real thing — how often a rusher disrupts the quarterback — and it does the job better than the sack totals it was built to replace. But it is assembled from thousands of subjective calls, it leaks the coverage behind the rusher into his personal line, and it counts a devastating rep and a cosmetic one as the same unit. Use it, but use it as the informed opinion it is: a charter’s best guess at disruption, not a stadium clock. When two trustworthy sources hand you different pressure numbers for the same player, they are not both wrong. They are showing you exactly how much of this stat is judgment.
